双圈定性滤纸一般采用重力过滤,利用滤纸截留固相微粒而使固-液分离,滤纸通常单层或多层叠起来使用。滤纸拥有天然的机械强度和一定的韧性,如果需要加快过滤速度,可将滤纸多次折叠(如两层滤纸叠成扇形或扎花型),可显著增大过滤速度。在气泵过滤时,可根据抽力大小在漏斗中叠放2—3层滤纸,或先垫一层致密滤布,上面再放滤纸过滤。高腐蚀性的浓硝酸和浓硫酸溶液不宜采用普通滤纸过滤,应采用Whatman特种滤纸,如1573号滤纸等。定性滤纸还常用于清洁试验台和清洁擦拭实验室的各种设备工具。
